Winemaking Supplies What Do You Need?
April 18th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedAlthough winemaking is not an very easy hobby and you need some winemaking supplies to get started, it has been a very popular
hobby for many years now. That is not as strange as it sounds because making your own wine is a very enjoyable and even profitable activity. If you have never made your own wine before you should really try it out, and when you and your spouse or family and friends are sitting down experiencing your own home made wine, you will be so proud.
Before you can start you need some winemaking supplies and the best place to buy these is to go to your local home brew store or look for a good store online, for example all the stores we advertise for are here at brewingyourown. com we trust and we know they provide good services.
What kind of winemaking supplies do you need?
- Patience - You need some time and patience to make good wine. With out patience you end up with just plain grape juice.
- Containers - when you buy the plastic containers make sure that are from food-grade plastic otherwise your wine is going to taste like plastic.
- Airlock - prevent your containers from exploding
- Hydrometer - to check how much alcohol you have created
- Sanitizer - To kill any harmful bacteria
You can buy all these winemaking supplies in one time in a so called winemaking kit. In most winemaking kits there will be the above winemaking supplies and a batch of grape juice or concentrate but wine can be made from almost all fruits, especially crab apples and elderberries.
Most of the time the kit will also contain some bottles and corks, but if you are not using a kit you will also need to buy those. Don’t buy to much winemaking supplies at once when you are just beginning, get some experience first and than decide if you will really would like to do this as a hobby.
Making Wine is a lot of work and the most time is being consumed with cleaning and sanitizing. But be honest, when you have produced your own tasty wine for less than $2 a bottle wouldn’t you be proud?

Brewing with a home brew and wine kit
Those of you who are new to home brewing and wine making can buy everything you need from scratch, but it’s much easier to get a home brew and wine kit that provide all the equipment, instructions, and ingredients to get started with home brewing and wine making right away.
The Basic home brew and wine kits
A basic home beer brewing kit will include the following:
- A brew keg fermenter, usually made of lightweight, shatter-resistant food grade polyvinyl chloride. The standard size is sufficient to brew two gallons of beer at a time.
- A lid and tap assembly set for the brew keg fermenter.
- A premium quality “brew pack” that takes the guesswork out of brewing beer at home. These premixed brew packs contains all the yeast, beer mix, and sanitizer you’ll need to make your beer. Changing the kind and quantity of these ingredients changes the color and taste of the beer you brew.
- Lightweight, reusable bottles and bottle caps. Many home brewers recycle carbonated soda beverage bottles to use in addition to the bottles that come in these kits for bottling their home brewed beer.
- Self-adhesive labels for your beer bottles, to give them an authentically brewed look. Eventually you might want to create your own house label, and put your own label on the bottles of beer that you brew yourself at home.
- Finally, no home beer brewing kit is complete without a set of handy utensils. You don’t want to have to use your baking accessories for beer brewing. Your home beer brewing kit should include measuring spoons, funnels, a hop scale, and a sugar measure.
Your basic home wine making kit should include at least the following equipment:
- One glass carboy, for fermenting the liquid.
- A fermenting bucket, drilled for a spigot.
- Bottle filler and tubing.
- A siphon tube.
- A small drilled stopper.
- A thermometer.
- An airlock.
- A sanitizer.
Using a home brew and wine kit for your new hobby as a couple is the smartest thing you can do, when you have practiced and created your own recipes together you can create your own brew of beer or wine. Enjoy the fruits of your labor together.
